Avient announced the launch of its new Gravi-Tech™ density-modified thermoplastic, which can be advanced metal electroplated surface treatment to provide the look and feel of metal in advanced packaging applications.
In order to meet the growing demand for metal substitutes in the luxury packaging industry, the expansion of the product portfolio includes 15 grades suitable for electroplating and physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes. These high-density materials provide the ability to create a variety of enhanced metal surfaces to increase visual appeal and express high quality and high value. In addition, these materials also have the design freedom and manufacturing convenience of thermoplastics, and can be used in applications such as luxury bottle caps, caps and boxes.
“These metallizable grades provide high-end packaging manufacturers with a simpler way to incorporate the luxurious appearance and weight of metal into their products.” The relevant person said, “The combination of our density modification technology and metal coating It gives customers more design freedom, improves the sensory experience, and also saves time and cost.”
When designing with metals such as aluminum, zinc, iron, steel, and other alloys, designers face various processing challenges and design constraints. The injection-molded Gravi-Tech can help designers achieve evenly distributed weight, complex designs and visual surface effects of metals without the need for additional costs and steps related to die-casting molds or secondary assembly operations.
The new Gravi-Tech grades are available in polypropylene (PP), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) or nylon 6 (PA6) formulations, and their density is similar to traditional metals. The five new electroplating grades have a specific gravity range of 1.25 to 4.0, while the ten PVD grades have a specific gravity range of 2.0 to 3.8. They have excellent scratch resistance, adhesion and chemical resistance.
These metallization-compatible grades can be supplied globally to meet the weight, surface treatment and performance requirements required in various weight packaging applications.
