How can fiber composites replace steel in the development of chassis components? This is the problem that the Eco-Dynamic-SMC (Eco-Dynamic-SMC) project aims to solve.
Gestamp, the Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology and other consortium partners want to develop chassis components made of fiber composite materials in the project “Eco-Dynamic SMC”. Its purpose is to create a closed development cycle for mass-produced automotive suspension wishbones. During the development process, the traditionally used steel will be replaced by fiber composites made of recyclable materials in order to implement the “CF-SMC technology” (carbon fiber sheet-like molding compound).
In order to determine the fiber content and weight of the material pile prior to transfer to the mold, a digital twin is first created from raw material production. Product development simulations are based on material properties to determine material properties and fiber orientation for the manufacturing process. The prototype will then be tested as a component on a test vehicle to evaluate mechanical and acoustic behavior. The Eco-Power SMC project, which began in October 2021, focuses on a comprehensive, ongoing development process to develop fiber composite components that comply with the OEM approval process. In addition to car chassis components, a motor glider suspension component will also be developed.
