After carbon fibers are manufactured and shaped, they are usually woven into fabrics. To begin manufacturing fabrics, manufacturers create bundles of carbon fibers. Bundles are rated according to their fiber or filament content and are commonly referred to as 3k, 6k, 12k, and 15k. k stands for “kilo” and indicates that a 3k bundle consists of 3,000 carbon filaments. Since a single carbon fiber is only about 5-10 microns thick, a 3k bundle is only about 0.125 inches thick. A 6k bundle would then be about twice as thick as a 3k bundle, a 12k would be four times as thick, and so on. There are a lot of strong carbon fibers in such a compact space, which gives the carbon fiber material its incredible strength.
