Fiberglass Reinforcement for Fiberglass Fishing Boats–Fiberglass Chopped Strand Mat

There are six most commonly used reinforcing materials in the manufacture of fiberglass fishing boats:
1, Fiberglass chopped strand mat;
2, Multi-axial cloth;
3, uniaxial cloth;
4, Fiberglass stitched combo mat;
5, Fiberglass woven roving;
6, Fiberglass surface mat.
Now let’s introduce fiberglass chopped strand mat (CSM) in detail.
Fiberglass chopped strand mat (chopped strand mat), is a major fiberglass nonwoven reinforcing materials, FRP hand-layup process with the largest amount of reinforcing materials, but also used in some mechanical molding processes, such as RTM, winding, molding, continuous plate, centrifugal casting, etc. Typical applications include boats, automobiles, train parts, corrosion-resistant tanks, containers, water tanks, corrugated plates and so on.
In many large-scale hand-laid FRP products, short-cut filament felt is used together with untwisted roving chevron, and the non-directional distribution of short-cut filaments in the short-cut filament felt makes up for the lack of distribution of chevron in the warp and weft directions only, and at the same time significantly improves the inter-laminar shear strength of the FRP products.
Short-cut felt unit in the fiberglass manufacturing plant belongs to the larger equipment. The width of the felt produced by the felt machine is generally in the range of 1.27~4.5 m. Large units not only have a large output, high efficiency, good uniformity of the felt, and the width of the felt can be slit according to the user’s requirements in the production line of the felt machine, and the adaptability of the product is large. Therefore, the large-scale short-cut felt unit is more and more welcomed by the glass fiber manufacturers. Short-cut felt varieties are 200, 230, 300, 380, 450, 600, 900g / ㎡, the most common varieties in the range of 300 ~ 600g / ㎡.
Short-cut felt made of fiberglass content of fiberglass after about 30%. Due to the short-cut felt within the fiberglass is not continuous, and laying the layer of fiberglass content is less, so, with this material paved into the lower strength of the laminate, but it also has advantages, such as good watertight, resin soaked (Wetout) good, strong adhesion between the layers, the finished product has a beautiful appearance, strength without anisotropy, the complex surface of the work on the easy, low-cost, and so on. Mostly used in the outermost layer adjacent to the gel coat and the middle layers with lower bending stress.
